During a year of service in Iraq, he managed to save numerous lives, meanwhile trying to keep his spirit up.
Nick Pierzchalski, a member of the Army National Guard, during his risky military service, transported many wounded soldiers to safety by helicopter.
Being far from his home, the black hawk pilot found comfort in a dog, he occasionally encountered, one day in the war zone. The puppy was all alone wandering nearby their hangar.
Then he approached to Nick and immediately befriended him. It was so unexpected for Nick, he was so excited to have such a friendly, kind companion during his hard service months.
He called the stray dog Airys, who was only a few months old. Nick with his friends built a kennel for her new friend and started to take care of her, feeding her with the soldier food. Later, he could order some dog food for her furry companion.
Nick and Airys became inseparable friends. This friendship was so precious for Nick, as Airys kept his spirit up, and made his days brighter. She also was a source of happiness and a sign of home for him.
But soon the time came to say goodbye to his beloved dog, as his duty tour was over. Nick’s heart was broken with the thought he should leave Airys. He decided to bring his beloved pet to his sweet home, giving her opportunity of better, comfortable and peaceful life.
And his plans came true thanks to SPCA and Baghdad Pups Operation, who organized the transportation of the adorable dog. So, after several months of separation, Nick was at Tampa International Airport to greet Airys.
He was so excited and disturbed with the thought that his lovely pet might not remember him.
Airys was in a cage, she was also very excited. When Airys came out of the cage, she immediately run to her human and started to lick his face, happily wagging her tail.
Nick was in tears, he was very happy, eventually to have the chance to hug his best furry friend.
