A mother’s instinct to protect never fades, even when her children become adults. I’m a 52-year-old woman, living peacefully with my husband, Julien, in a quiet suburb of Montclair. We’ve been married for over two decades and have an only son, Lucas, who is the apple of our eye.
Lucas, now 22, is about to finish university. Although he moved out a few years ago, we’ve always stayed close. Or so I thought—until a surprising phone call disrupted our routine.
On a regular Tuesday evening, as Julien and I were comfortably watching TV, the phone rang. On the other end, Lucas’s enthusiastic voice rang out:
— Mom, Dad, I have big news! I met someone. Her name is Clara and she’s amazing. We’ve been dating for three months and… I asked her to marry me. She said yes!
Silence fell. Three months? An engagement? I looked at Julien, searching for reassurance in his eyes.
— You’re engaged? I asked, still in shock.
— Yes! Clara is a little shy, but I convinced her to come have dinner with us this weekend. You’re going to love her.
Of course, I replied, trying to mask my concern.
Lucas had never mentioned being in a relationship during his university years. And now he was announcing his engagement to a woman he had known for only a short time. After hanging up, I shared my worries with Julien.
— What do we know about her? Where is she from? What does she do?
— I don’t know much, he admitted. Maybe it’s just love.
The next day, I tried to learn more from Lucas, but his answers were vague. He assured me Clara was wonderful and that I’d understand once I met her. So I decided to focus on preparing the dinner.
When the day came, I pulled out all the stops: roast chicken, apple pie, fancy tableware. Julien even bought steaks, just in case Clara preferred beef.
When the doorbell rang, our excitement was palpable. Lucas stood there, accompanied by Clara, a young woman with brown hair and green eyes. She was charming, but something about her face seemed familiar.
A few months earlier, my friend Sophie had shown me a photo of a woman who had scammed her son. This woman had convinced him to buy her an expensive engagement ring and then disappeared. Seeing Clara triggered an alarm in my mind.
I remained polite, but inside I was boiling. During dinner, I discreetly searched for the photo Sophie had sent me but couldn’t find it. I needed to be sure.
Taking advantage of a moment, I offered to have Clara help me pick out a wine from the cellar. Once we were downstairs, I left her there and hurried back upstairs.
— Julien, call the police. Now!
Lucas, startled, asked what was going on. I explained that Clara looked suspiciously like the scammer Sophie had told me about. He protested, insisting that Clara was honest and that he loved her.
I called Sophie, who quickly resent me the photo. I showed it to Julien and Lucas, convinced I had made the right call.
The police arrived shortly after. Lucas went to get Clara, who came back upstairs with a playful smile. She explained that it wasn’t the first time someone had mistaken her for that scammer. One of the officers confirmed that the real culprit, now known as Rosalie, had recently been spotted in Argentina. Clara was not her.
I was relieved—but deeply embarrassed. Clara, with great humor, joked about this unforgettable first meeting with her future in-laws. She had even picked out an excellent bottle of wine.
Lucas hugged her and shot me a knowing look. The evening ended with sincere apologies and a fresh start. Over time, I got to know Clara, discovering a warm, funny woman who loved baking. She even made her own wedding cake.
This experience taught me the importance of not jumping to conclusions. While I’ll always be a protective mother, I’m learning to trust my son’s choices. And now, we have an unforgettable family story to share.
