“The old man bought himself a second youth,” one of them remarked.
“And she bought herself an inheritance,” another replied with a mocking smile.
But Victor didn’t care about their comments at all.
Until a young waiter approached him, holding a folded piece of paper.
“Mr. Bennett, a child left this note for you at the reception desk,” the waiter whispered.
Victor calmly opened the note.
But his eyes widened when he read these few words:
“CANCEL THE PARTY. IF YOU SPEND THE NIGHT WITH THIS WOMAN, YOU WILL NOT LIVE TO SEE THE SUNRISE.”
His face immediately fell.
He thought of Marcus at once. Was his desperate stepfather trying to betray him? Was it one of his unhappy business associates? Or perhaps one of his former wives?
Victor tore the note into tiny pieces, ordered a glass of strong liquor, and decided he would not allow anyone to intimidate him.
A few hours later, back at his residence in Coral Gables, he took Lena by the arm and led her directly into the bedroom he had prepared for their wedding night.
Lena was pale. She was trembling and took a step backward.
“Victor, please… I’m not ready,” she begged, raising her hands.
“You are my wife now, and you signed the agreement,” Victor replied firmly.
He moved toward her confidently.
Lena stepped back again, stumbled against the edge of the bed, and closed her eyes in terror.
