The Egg Slicer, that little cult object we thought had disappeared
In the kitchens of the past, every food had its tool: potato masher, aspic mold, and of course… the egg slicer. This little device, often made of colorful plastic and equipped with stretched metal wires, allowed you to slice a hard-boiled egg into perfect rounds in just seconds.
Its invention dates back to the early 20th century, a time when the presentation of dishes was just as important as their taste. Cutting a hard-boiled egg by hand without damaging it was sometimes a challenge. Thanks to this accessory, no more irregular pieces! With a single motion, the egg was sliced with almost surgical precision.
It was widely used in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, when cold buffets and egg-based starters were all the rage. The sliced eggs would end up in salads, buttered toast, or as a sandwich garnish. Some even used it to cut soft fruits like strawberries or kiwis.
Today, this utensil has become rare. It is still made, but many consider it a gadget of the past. However, among collectors of vintage objects or retro cooking enthusiasts, it still holds a special place.
A symbol of an era when the dining table was an art and every detail mattered, the egg slicer is a small, silent witness to our culinary history.
And you… do you still have it at home, or in your parents’ things?
