There were moments in my life when I felt like I could overcome anything. But after losing our child only a few weeks earlier, I barely had the strength to leave my house. One evening, my husband Andrey and I stopped by his sister Bianca’s apartment to bring her an engagement congratulations card that had accidentally been delivered to our mailbox. The apartment door was slightly open, and bursts of laughter were coming from the kitchen. We didn’t want to listen in, but the words that followed made us freeze in place.
— Of course, I have to invite Mara too. After all, my brother is paying for almost everything, Bianca was telling her friend. But honestly… next to us, she’ll look like a whale.
They both burst into laughter.

Bianca stood frozen for a few seconds. She was probably expecting to see an embarrassed woman who would avoid eye contact and look for an excuse to leave. But I stepped out of the car beside Andrey, wearing the swimsuit he had given me.
For the first time in weeks, I wasn’t trying to hide my body. I wasn’t trying to hide my pain either.
