They’re often thrown away, but they’re useful: here’s what onion skin is good for!
We often hear that we shouldn’t throw away vegetable peels because they can have numerous benefits, being a source of vitamins A, C, and E. Recently, on TikTok, I came across a profile @elle_kvl that shares lifestyle and motherhood tips. In her latest video, she explains why it’s interesting to reuse the skins of red onions and garlic cloves. She never throws them in the trash!
Perfect for seasoning
In the video, we see her cleaning the onion skins before placing them in a cake mold, which she fills with the onion skins and puts in the oven. This step is necessary to dry them properly. Once they’re nicely roasted, she grinds them into a fine powder using a blender. She uses this powder as a spice while cooking.
She asked her followers: “Did you know that the skin of red onions and garlic is full of fiber and antioxidants, which greatly support the immune system?”
Many were thrilled that she shared this tip because the skin of onions has a wonderful taste and enhances dishes.
Does this tip also work with other fruits and vegetables?
Yes! Dr. Karan Raj, an NHS surgeon, explained in a TikTok video why we shouldn’t throw away orange peels. While he doesn’t recommend eating it raw, he states that it can provide us with essential nutrients. Orange peel is indeed rich in pectin, an excellent source of dietary fiber, as well as vitamin C, carotenoids, and polyphenols, which play a key role in reducing inflammation.
In his video, the surgeon advises grating orange peel and adding it to pastries: not only does it elevate the flavor, but it also has health benefits.
A study conducted in 2023 even proved that vegetable peels contain as much vitamin C, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidants as the flesh of oranges or lemons. 🍊✨
