All you need are simple cardboard egg cartons, whether they have 10, 20, or 30 compartments. Pick a day for your winter planting and take your time to prepare the seeds properly. The result will be well worth it.
Start by cutting a small cross-shaped opening at the bottom of each compartment with a sharp knife. This will allow the roots to grow freely as the cardboard decomposes in the soil. Next, prepare your seeds. If you have coated seeds, place one in each compartment. For regular seeds, spread them out on a clear surface and use a slightly dampened toothpick to pick one up and gently place it in each compartment.
Once all the seeds are sown, stack the egg cartons on top of each other. This way, everything will be prepared in advance, and all you’ll have to do is wait for spring. When it’s time to plant, loosen the soil in your garden, making sure it stays moist. Then, place the compartments directly into the soil, side by side.
Cover them with a thin layer of potting soil or compost, about one to two centimeters thick. Water gently with a watering can, being careful not to scatter the soil. To maintain good humidity and speed up the cardboard decomposition, cover the whole thing with a plastic film.
