“You’re far too handsome to be single,” my six-year-old daughter declared to New York’s most feared mafia boss. “You should be my daddy!”
Every armed man in Adrian Kane’s mansion froze. I stood paralyzed in my maid’s uniform, convinced that my daughter had just gotten us into serious trouble.
It had all started early that morning when her babysitter called to say she was sick. With no one else to look after Mia, I had no choice but to bring her to work with me at the mansion of the feared Adrian Kane, a thirty-six-year-old man who ran a criminal empire in Manhattan.
I had strictly instructed her to stay in the staff room, eat her cookies, and watch her cartoons quietly. She had even asked whether she could question my boss about why he never smiled. I had firmly forbidden it.
For almost two hours, everything went smoothly. Then the housekeeper sent me to prepare the west dining room. When I returned, Mia was gone.
Panicking, I searched the kitchen and hallways before hearing something unimaginable: Adrian Kane was laughing.
I followed the sound to his office and found my daughter standing in front of him while two armed guards watched the scene in astonishment.
Adrian had crouched down to her level.
“You’re very handsome,” Mia informed him. “And you’re tall.”
Amused, he gave a faint smile. But my daughter wasn’t finished.
“You should be my daddy!”
“Mia!” I cried, rushing toward her.
She turned around cheerfully. “Mommy, I found your boss!”
I was about to scold her when Adrian stood up. His smile vanished, and his cold gaze settled on me. The dangerous mafia boss had slipped back into his usual mask.
Then he turned to Mia.
“Why do you think your mother needs me to become your daddy?”
My daughter’s smile faded. Clutching her stuffed elephant against her chest, she looked at me before whispering:
“Because Mommy thinks I’m asleep when she cries.”
I held my breath. Adrian remained motionless, visibly moved by her words.
But then Mia added one final sentence, revealing something I had never told anyone.
For the first time, the mafia boss looked genuinely stunned…

Mia stepped closer to Adrian Kane and whispered in his ear:
“The man with the scar says you killed Daddy.”
My blood ran cold. Adrian, New York’s most feared mafia boss, stood perfectly still.
“What man with the scar?” he asked.
Mia hugged her stuffed elephant tightly. “The one who comes when Mommy is at work.”
I tried to contradict her, but she reminded me that I thought she was asleep whenever I cried.
Adrian then learned that her father, Thomas Bennett, had worked for him before dying in a mysterious car accident eighteen months earlier. However, his company’s records revealed that Thomas had been using another name and had disappeared just before an audit.
Then Mia revealed a shocking detail: her father had hidden a key inside her stuffed elephant.
Shortly afterward, we discovered that our apartment had been searched. An envelope left behind by Thomas identified Victor Sloane, Adrian’s head of security, as a traitor. An anonymous message demanded that we hand over the stuffed animal before six o’clock that evening.
Adrian realized that Victor was involved. After examining the key, we discovered that it provided access to an old accounting room beneath the mansion. Inside were records proving that Victor had been diverting Kane Maritime’s operations to finance illegal trafficking.
But Victor caught us and attempted to destroy the evidence. Fortunately, Adrian had already alerted the authorities and sent them copies of the documents. Confronted with the evidence gathered against him, Victor was arrested. The investigation eventually established his involvement in Thomas’s death.
For his part, Adrian agreed to take responsibility for the crimes his organization had enabled. He cooperated with the authorities and began dismantling the illegal operations of his empire.
Nevertheless, I remained cautious. I didn’t want my daughter to replace her father with a powerful man simply because he had protected us.
Adrian respected my boundaries. He demanded neither gratitude nor immediate trust. Over the following months, his actions proved that he was genuinely willing to change.
One day, Mia handed him a contract she had drawn by hand: a trial period to become her daddy, valid for one hundred years, on the condition that he smiled more often and used less salt when cooking.
Eventually, I agreed, but on one condition: Thomas would never be replaced.
Adrian nodded.
For the first time, the man the entire city feared was no longer trying to give orders.
He was simply waiting to be given a place in our lives.
