The extraordinary discovery made by miners deep inside the Naica Mine, Mexico
In the year 2000, in the suffocating darkness of a Mexican mine, two brothers, Juan and Pedro Sanchez, worked tirelessly. They had only one thought in mind: to finish their day and escape this underground furnace.
The roar of the machines pumping water and the stifling heat made the atmosphere unbearable. Yet that day, fate had an unexpected discovery in store for them.
As they were digging a new passage, 290 meters underground, a section of limestone suddenly collapsed. A gaping opening appeared, releasing a blast of scorching air that took their breath away.
Intrigued, the workers approached with their flashlights and discovered a breathtaking sight: a vast cavity filled with gigantic white crystals. What they saw exceeded anything they could have imagined. More than a hundred of these translucent formations covered the floor and walls.
The Naica Mine, located in the state of Chihuahua, is famous for its deposits of lead, silver, and zinc. But what makes it unique is the magma chamber located 5 kilometers below the surface. Its heat contributed to the formation of these natural wonders.
Alerted, engineer Roberto Gonzalez quickly arrived on site. Aware of the discovery’s importance, he ordered work to be diverted to preserve this treasure. The site was quickly named “the Crystal Cave.” Scientists were called in to study this unique phenomenon.
In 2017, researchers announced they had found traces of microorganisms inside the crystal water, estimated to be between 10,000 and 50,000 years old. But exploring this cave is a real challenge. Temperatures exceed 55°C and humidity reaches 100 %, making the air unbreathable within minutes. Even with special suits and respirators, scientists can’t stay longer than 45 minutes.
The origin of these crystals dates back 26 million years. The heat from the magma enriched the underground water with minerals, promoting the formation of anhydrite. When the temperature dropped below 58°C, this substance transformed into selenite, a crystalline form of gypsum. Their colossal size is explained by an exceptionally slow growth, spanning a million years.
Unfortunately, since the discovery, the cave is in danger. Exposure to air damages the crystals. As long as pumps keep draining the water, erosion continues. As soon as they stop, the cavity refills, protecting this natural masterpiece. The dilemma remains: preserve this wonder by submerging it forever or make it accessible to researchers at the cost of its degradation.
