Born in Plaistow, a suburb of London, Mary Ann Webber came into the world in 1874, part of a large family. She was a nurse by profession and led an honest yet happy life. A Rare and Devastating Condition
After losing her husband, Mary Ann developed a rare condition known as acromegaly, caused by an overproduction of growth hormones. This illness led to progressive deformities in her facial features and abnormal growth of her hands and feet. These physical changes, little understood at the time, made her the target of ridicule in a society ill-disposed toward her.

Determined to secure her children’s future, Mary Ann decided to participate in a “most unattractive woman” contest, where she won a prize.
