I just thought I’d do a bit of sorting through my clothes, but suddenly it turned into an unexpected nightmare…

While sorting through my wardrobe, I came across one of my sweaters… and then, a chilling surprise: small, elongated red balls had embedded themselves in the wool. 😳

Their texture was rough, and the smell they gave off was downright unpleasant… 😖

Driven by curiosity (and a bit of anxiety), I started investigating. I might have preferred never to know… 😱

Since that discovery, I keep advising everyone around me to regularly air out their closets every season. Leaving clothes locked away for months (or years, as I did) is a risk you might regret…

When a simple clothes sorting turns into a nightmare…

One rainy Sunday, determined to make space in my wardrobe, I started a big sort through my winter clothes. My idea? To give a second life to those nearly new sweaters I hadn’t worn for years.
But when I opened the closet door… I had no idea what I was about to find.

On one of my favorite sweaters, there were small reddish, oval-shaped balls scattered all over. Curious, I first thought they were dried berries that had fallen by chance or some mysterious forgotten seeds. But when I touched them, the illusion quickly vanished: they were dry, rough… and the smell instantly made me want to stop breathing.

A discovery that made me grimace…

Intrigued and a little alarmed, I did what anyone would do: I went online. And there, I found the surprisingly organic origin of these little things. They weren’t plants, but rodent droppings!
Their reddish color came from an old pest control product I had completely forgotten spraying in that closet years ago…

Just imagining little mice running between my sweaters and nibbling on my woolens all that time… made me feel nauseous.

My wardrobe: a secret rodent hideout

Upon further inspection, I found a hole in the sleeve of another sweater. And at the back of the wardrobe, the icing on the cake: a cozy little nest made of shredded cotton, tangled threads, and chewed-up paper. Needless to say, my clothes had turned into a 5-star campsite for pests.

The result? I had to say goodbye to several sweaters, my winter scarves, and a few sentimental items I cared about. I threw everything away. Then I launched a deep cleaning operation: disinfection, high-temperature washing, brushing, prolonged airing…
And believe me, today my closet has never been healthier.

We always think this kind of thing only happens to others… until it’s our turn. Here’s what I’ll never do again:

  • Let clothes sleep for years without checking on them

  • Close a closet without ever airing it out

  • Use a product without noting where and when I applied it

  • Store clothes without protecting them in airtight boxes

Since that day, my wardrobe is equipped with natural pest control solutions, and I sort through it every season. A small habit that prevents many nasty surprises…

Moral of the story?
A simple strange detail can be enough to upset your whole organization — and remind you that even our closets need a little attention.
