Find out in the article below 👇
During my visit to my grandmother in France, I noticed something unusual in her kitchen. A heavy cast-iron tool, with a curved handle and a small sieve at the bottom. I stared at it for a moment, completely clueless about its use.
“Grandma, what is this thing?” I asked while handling the strange object.
“Oh, that’s my old potato ricer,” she replied with a smile.
At that moment, I didn’t think much of it, but later, I watched as she peeled and cooked a potato with great expertise. Then, she placed the potato into the device, turned the handle, and out came perfectly smooth and fluffy mashed potatoes onto the plate.
I was amazed. My whole life, I had believed mashed potatoes could only be made with a regular masher or a blender. But this method was different – no lumps, light and airy – completely opposite to what I was used to!
Curious, I did some research and discovered that this type of tool is quite common, especially among those who prefer traditional cooking methods.
These devices are mainly used for making vegetable purées, soups, sauces, and, of course, mashed potatoes.
Unlike blenders, which chop food with blades, these tools press food through a sieve, creating a smoother and more even texture.
Now, one thing is certain for me: for the best mashed potatoes, I trust my grandmother’s secret!
