When we bought our new home, every day seemed to hold a new surprise. The old house, with its wooden beams and slightly creaky floors, was full of mysteries. But the most surprising discovery was the staircase in the basement.
We noticed it while unloading boxes. A narrow hallway, lit by a small lamp, led to cement steps that abruptly ended in nothingness. At first, we found it strange, even downright enigmatic.
“Maybe there was a hidden room here,” my husband suggested. I started laughing, imagining it could contain valuable objects or treasures.
As our curiosity grew, we decided to meet with the previous owner to ask about this peculiar feature. His answer, while not shocking, was still fascinating.
It turns out the steps once led to a tunnel. This tunnel connected our house to the neighboring building—a local business that’s now a small café.
This type of tunnel was quite common in the past: it was used for food storage, as a shelter, or even as part of an evacuation system. Over time, the structure began to deteriorate, and at some point, the ground caved in. To prevent further risks, the tunnel was filled with concrete, leaving only these stairs as a remnant of the past.
