When I was in school, we took part in vocational training. Each of us chose a trade, and I went for sewing. One day a week, Thursdays, we didn’t go to school but worked in a company for practical experience. During the summer holidays, we did a two-week internship at a sewing workshop.
We made white blouses, or more precisely, we did various tasks like sewing the sleeves or cutting the pieces. In that workshop, an enormous quantity of blouses was produced.
And we were trusted like adults. As long as we hadn’t finished the agreed amount, we couldn’t leave. The experienced seamstresses in the workshop taught me a lot, and these lessons have been really useful in life.
For example, always smoothing every seam to perfection, or how to sharpen scissors to keep them sharp. The basic rule is to never let scissors get totally dull but to sharpen them regularly with tools at hand, without needing a professional. Here are some effective methods:
Fine needle method: Take a needle and place it at the end of the scissor blade. Then, as if opening the scissors with the needle, push it between the two blades. Repeat this 6 to 7 times, and you’ll see the scissors cut much better than before.
Medicine bottle method: Take a small medicine bottle, place the scissors against the neck, and, just like before, open the scissors. 6 to 7 motions are enough to stabilize the blades. These steps take just a few seconds.
If the scissors still don’t cut, and they’re catching on fabric or even paper, a deeper sharpening is needed. In this case, fine-grit sandpaper will be very helpful. Place it on a perfectly smooth surface, like a picture frame glass, and slide the blade over it several times, directing it toward you.
It’s this part of the scissors, where the metal is slanted, that ensures the cut. It’s important to align the blade perfectly with the sandpaper surface. These methods work for both paper scissors and sewing scissors.
Paper scissors: These often have a screw. If it loosens, they won’t cut properly. Just gently tap the screw with a hammer.
Quality scissors from the past also had a screw that was easily adjustable. I use several pairs of scissors at once, but honestly, this one is my favorite. I hope these tips were helpful, and you can put them into practice in real life.
