šØ I thought I had made a huge mistakeā¦ When I inherited these old armchairs from my grandmother, some people told me they were only good for the junkyard. A few years ago, before my grandmother’s house was sold, we decided to keep some of her most precious furniture. Among them were two antique armchairs that she cherished deeply. They had stood the test of time, silent witnesses to conversations, laughter, and moments of rest shared across generations. Abandoning them was unthinkable.
A Custom Transformation
As soon as they arrived in the city, we knew they needed a makeover. Their style didnāt really match our home, but their potential was undeniable. The project was on: they deserved a second life!
First, we chose new fabrics to reupholster them. Instead of going for a single uniform fabric, I decided to mix things up by selecting two distinct patterns. This approach gave each chair a unique personality while ensuring they blended harmoniously into our living space.
The armrests also needed a fresh touch. For the first armchair, I chose a vibrant coral shade, complementing the floral tones of the fabric. Some people criticized this choice, saying it didnāt match the rest, but to me, it was the bold accent the chair needed. After all, a statement piece isnāt meant to blend ināitās meant to stand out and brighten up the space.
Two Chairs, Two Identities
The second armchair presented a different challenge. Unlike the first one, its style didnāt immediately inspire me. After some hesitation, I initially painted the armrests in the same coral shade. But something felt off. After some thought, I decided to restore the wood to its natural color.
This choice required meticulous work: my husband and I set out to strip and sand the armrests, bringing back their original beauty.
After several hours of effort, the wood revealed its authentic texture, though traces of the old paint remained. Instead of trying to erase them completely, I chose to embrace the vintage charm by applying a tinted oil, blending two subtle shades. This detail gave the chair even more characterāa perfect balance between modernity and history.
The Final Result: A Tribute to Memory
Once the fabric was secured and the final adjustments made, our two armchairs were unrecognizable! Each had its own unique style while sharing a common story. One was bold and colorful, instantly drawing attention, while the other, more understated and elegant, added a touch of authenticity.
Today, these chairs proudly sit in our living room, reminding us every day of the family legacy they carry.
Their transformation is more than just a makeoverāitās a tribute to my grandmother and the memories attached to them. A proof that objects have a soul and that with a bit of creativity and love, they can continue to stand the test of time.
And you, have you ever given new life to a piece of furniture with a history?
