=====

The bronze horse slipped from Lucas Brooks’s hands before anyone in the vast marble hallway even realized what he was doing.

Natalie caught only a flash of dark metal spinning beneath the chandelier’s light.

Then the statuette slammed violently into her side before crashing onto the polished marble floor with a bang that seemed to shake the entire mansion.

Pain shot beneath her ribs instantly, so sharp that it knocked the breath from her lungs.

At the other end of the hallway, Daniel Brooks froze in the doorway.

For a second, the most feared man in the house no longer looked like a powerful crime boss, but like a father who had just realized he didn’t truly know his own son.

“Lucas, stop.”

His voice was firm, but concern seeped through it.

Lucas didn’t stop.

The five-year-old boy’s face was covered in tears, but his little fists were clenched as though he had been fighting for hours.

He charged toward Natalie and kicked at her leg.

Natalie could have stepped back.

She could have screamed.

She could have called for one of the security guards already approaching the hallway.

Instead, she slowly knelt down.

Her face tightened with pain, but her voice remained calm.

“That hurts.”

Lucas froze.

No one in the Brooks mansion spoke to him like that.

The adults either ordered him to stop, promised him something to calm him down, or left the room whenever his anger became too difficult to handle.

Natalie placed one hand over her ribs and the other over her heart.

Lucas still had one fist raised.

His entire little body was trembling.

Natalie looked at him as though that fist wasn’t the most important thing she saw in him.

“You must be carrying something very heavy in there.”

She placed a hand over his chest.

Lucas parted his lips, but no sound came out.

The rage in his eyes flickered.

Behind that anger was something far more frightening.

Fear.

Natalie saw it immediately.

So did Daniel.

He took a step forward.

Lucas suddenly turned his head toward him and raised his fist even higher.

Daniel stopped.

Natalie, however, never took her eyes off the boy.

“I’m not going to run away from you.”

Lucas blinked.

A tear slid down his cheek.

Natalie opened her arms slightly, careful not to frighten or overwhelm him.

“And I’m not going to yell.”

The hallway became so quiet that Natalie could hear the faint hum of the chandeliers.

Lucas’s fist began to lower.

His fingers slowly opened.

His face twisted, no longer with anger this time, but with the effort of holding something inside.

Then he crossed the distance between them.

He didn’t walk.

He collapsed into her arms.

Natalie caught him against her chest and winced as pain tore through her ribs.

She didn’t let go.

Lucas buried his face in the soft gray fabric of her uniform.

His shoulders shook with muffled sobs.

Daniel stood several feet away.

He had faced judges, rivals, armed men, and entire rooms filled with people too terrified to tell him no.

Yet nothing had ever left him as helpless as the sight of his son clinging to a maid he had known for only three days.

Lucas tightened both little hands around Natalie’s uniform.

“Don’t leave.”

The words were barely audible.

Natalie’s expression changed.

She looked over Lucas’s head at Daniel.

His face went pale.

The boy repeated:

“Please, don’t leave.”

Natalie gently ran a hand through his hair.

“I’m here.”

Lucas shook his head against her shoulder.

“No…”

The next words came out broken by terror.

“They all say that.”

Daniel’s gaze dropped to the bronze horse lying on the marble floor.

Natalie felt Lucas’s breathing begin to slow.

But across the hallway, Daniel looked like a man who had just felt something crack inside him.

A woman dressed in black appeared near the staircase.

Evelyn Hart, the mansion’s longtime housekeeper, watched the scene with obvious disapproval.

Her gaze moved from the broken statuette to Natalie holding Lucas in her arms.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Brooks, I’ll call the agency.”

Natalie lifted her head.

Evelyn’s voice was cold and perfectly controlled.

“We can have a replacement here by tomorrow morning.”

Lucas stopped breathing for a second.

His little hands tightened violently around Natalie’s uniform.

Daniel looked at his son.

Then he looked at Natalie.

Evelyn had already turned toward the office phone when Daniel spoke.

“No.”

Evelyn froze.

Daniel’s voice was calmer now.

“No one is calling anyone.”

Lucas lifted his face from Natalie’s shoulder.

For the first time since the statuette had flown across the hallway, a glimmer of hope appeared in his eyes.

Then Evelyn said the one sentence capable of making it disappear again:

“You said the same thing about the last one.”

Natalie wakes up the morning after the accident involving the bronze horse statue. Although a doctor determines that she has only suffered a severe bruise, she refuses Daniel’s offer to go home while continuing to receive her salary. Her decision is mainly motivated by Lucas, Daniel’s son, who fell asleep outside her door because he was afraid she would leave like the previous employees had.

At breakfast, Natalie learns that at least seven people have taken care of Lucas in less than two years. When she asks Evelyn why they left, Evelyn refuses to answer and warns her that certain rooms in the house are off-limits. She implies that the previous employees tried to “fix” Lucas before eventually leaving.

Daniel later reveals to Natalie that his son suffers from panic attacks. Natalie, however, realizes that Lucas’s real problem is his deep fear of abandonment. Soon afterward, the child brings her a drawing depicting Natalie, himself, his father, and a woman whose face has been violently scribbled out.

Natalie asks who she is.
