Stop Choosing Eggs Without Thinking: Here’s Why
Before, when I bought eggs, I only looked at the expiration date. But one day, my mother-in-law warned me: “Never buy this type of eggs again, even if they’re on sale!” 🤔😲 Curious, I asked why. It wasn’t about the date or the size… her explanation truly surprised me! 🥚✨ Discover her valuable advice right here ⬇️⬇️⬇️
When shopping, I never paid much attention to the details. I’d grab a carton, check the expiration date, and that was it. My only preference? Large eggs — I’ve always avoided the smaller ones.
However, during a visit, my mother-in-law, a master baker (responsible for the most delicious treats in our family), shared a crucial tip.
That day, she asked me to pick up some eggs. I bought a carton, checked the date as usual, and returned home, confident in my choice.
When I got back, she opened the carton and pointed out something I had never noticed before: “Look, some eggs have the pointed side up, while others have the rounded side up. Can you see that?”
Honestly, I’d never paid attention to such a detail. She then explained: if the eggs are arranged inconsistently, it’s a sign they’ve been handled, likely by customers picking through the cartons for the best ones. The remaining eggs may be smaller, more fragile, or less fresh.
But here’s the most important part: eggs should always be stored with their rounded side up. Why? Because the rounded end contains an air pocket that acts as a natural barrier against bacteria, including salmonella, and helps keep the eggs fresh longer.
If eggs are stored the wrong way, this natural protection weakens, allowing bacteria to enter more easily.
Since learning this, I’ve become much more cautious. I no longer focus solely on expiration dates — I also check how the eggs are positioned in the carton.
Recently, I discovered eggs sold in airtight packaging in stores — the perfect solution for ensuring safety and freshness. Now, I only buy those. 🥚✅
