At seventy-one, I finally became a grandmother! I was so eager to see my grandson. But my son, Marc, told me he couldn’t come to pick me up. Amelia, an elderly mother, was determined to visit her newborn grandson. However, since her son Marc refused to pick her up, she decided to walk to his house despite her old age and reliance on a walker. Marc had explained over the phone that he was too busy running errands for his wife Camilla and their guests. He assured Amelia they would arrange for her to see her grandson another day. Though she understood, Amelia insisted, but Marc was adamant and cut the conversation short. The thought of walking back home crossed Amelia’s mind. Despite the long journey ahead, she was determined to make it.
She grabbed her walker, packed a small bag, and set off. The road was slow and exhausting, but after several stops and hours of walking, Amelia finally arrived at her son’s house. She hoped to see Marc and her grandson, but his reaction was shocking and heartbreaking.
Clearly irritated, Marc looked at her and bluntly asked what she was doing there, without even letting her in. He pushed her away and told her she had to leave, adding that he had already told her to come another day. Amelia, exhausted from her long journey, tried to explain, but Marc coldly ordered her to leave, showing no concern for her condition. He then slammed the door in her face.
Overwhelmed by sadness and loneliness, she chose not to insist. Before leaving, she placed a small package at the door, hoping Marc would find it later. On her way back, she was fortunate that a neighbor saw her and gave her a ride home. She was drained, her feet sore and aching. After some rest and care, Amelia remained on the sofa, unable to move.
Meanwhile, Marc was attending to his guests. But as he reflected on the situation, he felt a deep sense of shame. When he noticed the package left by his mother, he picked it up and saw a note that simply said, “From Grandma.” Inside, he found the childhood toys that held deep emotional value for him, despite their simplicity. This discovery brought him to tears.
His wife, Camilla, noticing his distress, grew concerned, and Marc finally confessed what he had done: he had been ashamed of his modest past and had distanced himself from his family in pursuit of a wealthier life. He felt guilty for treating his mother that way. Comforted by Camilla, Marc decided to apologize to Amelia.
When he arrived at her home, he found her lying on the couch, her legs wrapped up. He gently woke her, helped her sit up, and took her to her bedroom, carefully tending to her legs. With deep sincerity, he apologized for his actions. Moved, Amelia forgave him, realizing that he had been ashamed of his past. After their conversation, they shared a heartfelt moment, and the next day, Marc finally took his mother home to meet her grandson.
Camilla, touched by the scene, also apologized. The family spent a wonderful day together, and Marc asked his mother to move in with them so she would never be alone again.
