My husband bragged all evening on his birthday, but my gift put him back in his place…
Martin was sure everyone would admire him that evening. The day before, he had been congratulated at work for submitting his report on time, and since then he had gotten a big head.
He walked around the house as if he were the boss of the planet, spoke in an authoritarian tone, and got irritated if dinner was a few minutes late. “Sophie, you need to iron the shirts better. I have a different status now,” he explained to me. I smiled. There’s no point arguing with someone who is drunk on their own importance. It’s better to act.
Especially since there was a reason. It had been my birthday a month earlier. Martin had forgotten it. He had gone to choose curtains with my mother, Klara. No flowers. No gift. He didn’t even say “happy birthday” to me. “You didn’t throw a big party,” he shrugged. “So why congratulate you?”
At the time, I didn’t say anything. But I drew my conclusions.
For his 43rd birthday, we celebrated at home, surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues. Martin sat proudly at the head of the table, while Klara criticized every dish.
— The meat is too tough — she commented. — Martin is under pressure, he has a reputation to maintain.
He tapped his glass against mine:
— Sophie, bring another sauce. And where are the olives?
I smiled. Everything was going exactly as planned.
When the moment for gifts arrived, he was glowing with excitement. Envelopes, boxes, congratulations… and then my gift: a large box decorated with a ribbon.
— These must be the watches I told you about — he said, satisfied. — Give them to me.
— First, say a few words in front of everyone — I replied calmly. — After all, you’re the star today.
He stood up, adjusted his jacket, and began:
— My friends, you know the path I’ve traveled. Everything I have today, I owe to my work and my discipline. I’m recognized at the office, I’m entrusted with important projects. I’m used to leading — at home as well as in my profession. I provide for my family, I make the decisions… and I think that deserves respect.
The guests exchanged glances.
He sat down, a satisfied smile on his lips.
— Nice speech — I said. — Now open your gift.
He lifted the lid… Read the rest in the first comment 👇👇
Inside was a new professional drill… and a voucher for the hardware store.
— What?! — he turned pale.
— A gift, my dear. You told me you needed to reorganize the shelves at your mother’s place. I’m attentive and I take care of the family.
An icy silence settled around the table.
— You’re humiliating me! — he burst out.
— Not at all — I replied calmly. — I’m simply putting respect back where it should have been for a long time.
A month ago, you showed me that my feelings didn’t matter. Today, I’m showing that this will never happen again.
And just so you know — the apartment is mine. When the guests leave, you can clean up. Don’t forget the drill. It even has a warranty.
No one supported him. Not his friends, not his colleagues. His shining importance burst like a balloon.
An hour later, the guests had left. Forty minutes later, he left with his mother.
In the apartment, calm and lightness returned.
To all women, I say this: never get used to disrespect. If someone tramples on your feelings, they will do it again and again.
Sometimes the best gift for a man is the boundary you finally draw.
