Maïté, an emblematic figure of French culinary shows, passed away at the age of 86. Known for her prominent role in La Cuisine des Mousquetaires and À Table, she touched generations of viewers with her passion and candidness.
The sad news was confirmed by the mayor of Rion-des-Landes. Maïté leaves behind an unforgettable legacy in the world of gastronomy and television.
“For Rion, and even far beyond, it’s the loss of a Frenchwoman to whom we all felt connected, even identified with, through her joy and humor,” said Laurent Civel, the mayor of the village.
Maïté was the face of traditional French gastronomy, a popular figure, and a source of motivation for many families, embodying the art of being French.
Maria-Thérèsa Ordonnez, Maïté stood out for her straightforward character and abundant recipes.
Her career was filled with iconic moments. Like in 1992, when she struck an eel with a hammer in front of the cameras, intending to cook it à la matelote. “Come on, darling, you’re not going to get me,” she whispered as she crushed it.
In 1988, capitalizing on her great success, the chef opened her first restaurant in the Landes, Le Relais des Landes. She then opened a second restaurant, Chez Maïté, which closed in 2015. She also participated in the TV game show La Ferme des Célébrités.
In 1995, the TV culinary star even appeared in a film.
