I was ashamed to attend my own son’s wedding. I knew my clothes were worn, old, and that among all these elegant guests, I might seem out of place. Yet, I had no choice.
I am a simple salesperson in a fruit and vegetable shop. My salary is modest, but I have always kept my dignity. I raised my son alone and have always been proud of the man he has become. True, we never lived in luxury, but we lived honestly, and I always knew my place in this world.
When my son told me he was in love and wanted to marry a young woman from a wealthy family, I was overwhelmed. I was happy for him, yet wondered how I could help organize a wedding when we could barely make ends meet.
During the three months before the wedding, I slept poorly. I worried about everything: expenses, preparations, the fact that my only son was stepping into adulthood. But one question haunted me more than all the others: what would I wear on the big day?
In my youth, I had only one green dress. A simple, modest dress that I wore for all the important moments of my life. I wore it when my son was born. I wore it at his graduation. And despite my desire for something different, it was this old dress that I had to wear for his wedding.
When I entered the church, relatives of the bride’s family immediately began whispering:

— She could have worn something more suitable… How shameful, her son is getting married, and she’s dressed like that…
Every word pierced my heart. I felt out of place, lost among the perfect outfits, sparkling jewelry, and condescending looks.
Then my future daughter-in-law approached me. Tall, radiant, in a gorgeous white dress that must have cost a fortune. I felt even smaller next to her—insignificant, poor.

— Oh! You wore this dress. It’s beautiful. I’ve seen your photos from when you were young: you’ve hardly changed. You’re still as beautiful as ever.
A complete silence fell over the church. Even those who had been whispering went quiet.
She placed her hand on my shoulder and added, in a gentle voice:
— I am infinitely grateful to you for raising such a remarkable man. You did everything on your own and gave him the most precious gift: true love. I am proud to become a part of your family. And a dress… a dress is not the most important thing in life.
Then she leaned down and kissed my hand.
I couldn’t hold back my tears—they flowed on their own. For the first time, someone openly recognized my efforts, my work, all the love I had given my son over the years.
All the guests were staring at us, astonished.
