A few years ago, a house in Sicily was put on sale for one euro. The real estate market can sometimes seem out of reach, but this sale allowed a Chicago resident to make a dream come true. Meredith Tabone, a financial advisor, bought this house in the village of Sambuca di Sicilia without having seen it, thanks to a tip from a friend.
Originally from Sicily, with family roots there, she found the project exciting. In 2019, after making an offer, she received an email saying she had won the bid. For just under 6,000 EUR, including fees, she became the owner. In June 2019, she crossed the Atlantic to discover her new home.
Upon arrival, she saw the extent of the work: “There was no electricity, no running water, and the roof was asbestos,” she said. Plus, the floor was covered with “60 centimeters of pigeon droppings.” Despite these conditions, she wasn’t discouraged. She even bought another neighboring house for 22,000 EUR.
At first, she thought she’d invest around 40,000 EUR in renovations. But the work quickly cost much more. In the end, she spent 462,000 EUR to transform the two houses into a true paradise. Now, she has added four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a sauna, and a library.
Excited by her project, she began learning Italian and plans to spend four months a year in this charming village.
This adventure shows that with vision, courage, and a little luck, an abandoned property can turn into a dream home.
