He had rescued a woman… without imagining she would soon be the one deciding his future.
That morning, Lucas Perrin had no idea that stopping to help a stranger would completely turn his life upside down.
At 6:37 a.m., he shut the door of his modest apartment with a weary motion, nestled in the heart of a still-sleeping working-class neighborhood. His reddened eyes betrayed a sleepless night, and his hands trembled slightly — too many hours spent replaying the same thoughts over and over.
Pressed against his chest, he held a worn-out briefcase, almost ashamed to exist.
Inside: a simple USB drive, tiny, but carrying the only chance he had left. A video that, he hoped, could turn the situation around.
He needed to be at the downtown courthouse by 7:30 a.m., not a minute later.
He could no longer afford a single mistake.
His old white bike — dented, patched together in a dozen places — creaked when he pressed down on the pedals. Lucas made the sign of the cross out of habit, just like every morning, then headed south.
The traffic, already dense, seemed determined to become a permanent obstacle, as if the entire city was conspiring to keep him from arriving on time on this decisive day.
When he turned into a side street, he saw her: a woman standing beside a red sedan, the trunk open, a spare tire at her feet. From behind, she gestured in frustration. Her phone desperately displayed “no signal.”
Without thinking further, Lucas braked and leaned his bike against a low wall.
“Do you need a hand, ma’am?”
The woman turned around. Warm complexion, slender figure, hair pulled back, a firm yet worried gaze. She didn’t look much older than him, but everything about her radiated the confidence of someone used to being in charge.
“Yes, please. The tire blew out, and I don’t have the strength to change it. I’m terribly late.”
Lucas crouched by the wheel.
“Don’t worry, you’ll be back on the road in ten minutes.”
She stayed near him without speaking, watching him with a curiosity he pretended not to notice. Time was running out, but this small act of kindness brought him an unexpected sense of peace, like a moment of calm inside his inner storm.
“Do you have an important appointment?” she finally asked, trying to break the silence.
“Yes, very important. You?”
“Me too. First day in a new position… and here I am running late. Great start…”
Lucas smiled faintly without lifting his head.
“You know… they say days that start badly can still surprise you. I’m trying to believe it, anyway.”
When he finished, he wiped his hands and stood up. The woman looked at him for a moment — a bit longer than necessary.
“Thank you. What’s your name?”
“Lucas. Lucas Perrin.”
“Thank you, Lucas. You really saved me.”
He let out a nervous little laugh.
“Go on, get moving. And good luck on your first day.”
She gave him a sincere smile, got back into her car, and disappeared into the stream of vehicles.
Lucas got back on his bike, unaware that when he’d put his tools away, the tiny USB drive had slipped from his pocket… and fallen onto the passenger seat of the red sedan.
It was 7:42 when he dashed through the entrance of Civil Court No. 5. His shirt was soaked, and his briefcase, battered from the sprint, looked ready to fall apart.
A security guard pointed him to room 2B.
The endless hallway echoed beneath his steps like a frantic heartbeat.
Upon entering, he immediately spotted Master Salvetti: an overpriced suit, a venomous smile, the gaze of a hunter already certain of victory. At his side, Chloé Aguilar, face frozen, eyes cold as steel.
Then his breath caught.
On the bench, draped in her black robe, her expression grave and unreadable…
The judge.
The very same woman he had helped change a tire just an hour earlier…

At first, the judge doesn’t seem to connect him with the man she met earlier. The hearing begins, accusations fly, and then the decisive moment arrives: the moment when he must present his evidence. When he opens his briefcase, panic hits him. The USB drive is gone. He searches, turns every pocket inside out, but nothing. Without that video, his defense collapses. The opposing lawyer is already wearing a satisfied smile.
Seeing his distress, the judge briefly suspends the hearing to let him retrieve his documents. In the hallway, Lucas mentally retraces his entire morning. Then one image surfaces: the flat tire, the red sedan, his briefcase set on the seat. What if the drive was still there?
He goes down to the staff parking lot, spots the judge’s car, and cautiously opens the door. Under the passenger seat, his hand finally finds the small object he’d been desperately looking for. The USB drive. A wave of hope washes over him.

Back in the courtroom, the video is played. It clearly shows his colleague stealing the computer outside working hours. The atmosphere shifts immediately. The judge orders an analysis and postpones the case to the next day.
In the meantime, Master Salvetti attempts a desperate move: offering Lucas a large sum in exchange for a false confession, along with veiled threats. Lucas stays calm and secretly records the entire conversation.
The next day, when the lawyer announces a settlement, Lucas asks to speak and plays the recording. Silence falls. The judge verifies it, then rules: attempted manipulation. The accusation collapses. Lucas is declared innocent.
After the hearing, he returns the forgotten USB drive to her. Their eyes finally meet.
A simple act of kindness had been enough to reshape an entire destiny.
