š® Not all devices react well when unplugged. ā”ļø
I used to be almost paranoid about electrical safety and energy savings. š Every time I left the house, I would unplug everything. Absolutely everything. Especially if I was going away for the weekend or on a trip. āļø
Well⦠Who would have thought that this habit could sometimes lead to unpleasant surprises? I learned the hard way that some devices should never be deprived of power. š¤ Today, Iām sharing my experience with you: it could save you trouble⦠and money šøāļøāš® š š š
- Television
When I finally invested in a beautiful OLED TV, I thought, “I want this to last twenty years!” And to “extend” its lifespan, I started unplugging it every night. I was convinced it was a good idea⦠if only I had known!
It turns out that OLED screens are delicate and need time to refresh their pixels. If you interrupt this process, ghost images can appear and ruin the display quality.
Moreover, modern TVs often perform updates at night. If the red light starts blinking, you should never turn it off. Since Iāve left mine plugged in, everything works perfectly.
- Inkjet Printer
I bought a good printer a few years ago. I donāt use it often, so after each use, I would unplug it. Why leave it powered on if itās not in use?
The idea seemed logical⦠until I noticed that my ink cartridges were emptying at a crazy speed.
Hereās the problem: by unplugging it, the printer doesnāt go into sleep mode properly. Every time it restarts, it triggers a cleaning cycle that consumes a lot of ink. Now, I just turn it off with its button, and my cartridges last much longer.
- Wi-Fi Router
I used to turn off my router every night. I thought I was saving energy and protecting my limited internet plan back then.
Until the day I had to send an urgent email to work first thing in the morning⦠and my router took forever to restart. Result: unnecessary stress and an unstable connection at the worst possible time.
Since then, Iāve realized that maintaining a stable connection is essential, especially with a connected home. Lamps, cameras, voice assistants⦠Everything depends on Wi-Fi. So now, my router stays on 24/7, and I sleep soundly.
Other devices you should never unplug:
⢠Refrigerator and Freezer ā No need to explain why. If you cut the power, get ready to throw away all the food.
⢠Security Systems ā Alarm, cameras⦠Safety should never be sacrificed to save a few cents.
⢠Smart Thermostats ā Turning them off means risking returning home to a freezing house.
⢠Medical Devices ā If a loved one depends on a health device, it should remain plugged in at all times.
Saving electricity is great. But itās important to know where and how. Now, I only unplug the devices for which itās safe to do so.
And you, which devices do you always leave plugged in? Share your tips, Iām curious to see if Iāve missed anything!
