Behind the Scenes of Australia’s Largest Family
When Jeni met Ray, she didn’t want any children. He, on the other hand, wanted four. Thirty years later, they’re the parents of 16 children — nine boys and seven girls — and their extraordinary family is now one of the most talked about in Australia.
Raising 16 children in Toowoomba, Queensland, is a full-time adventure. Eight of them still live at home, and every week, the Bonells spend around $600 on groceries. Their consumption is impressive: 50 liters of milk, dozens of eggs, and 14 boxes of cereal. Grocery shopping requires at least two carts and multiple helping hands.
Jeni and Ray manage a packed schedule: between school timetables, part-time jobs, sports activities, and housework, organization is key. From the age of eight, each child is given rotating responsibilities, such as cooking meals or cleaning. Their 12-year-old son is even capable of preparing dinner for 20 people.
Dinner time is a true family ritual, bringing together between 8 and 20 people every evening. Jeni regularly shares tips on cooking on a budget and optimizing grocery shopping on her YouTube channel. “Everyone feels the pressure on the budget,” she says, “but good organization can work wonders.”
Despite the challenges, the Bonells rely on their faith, sense of humor, and strong team spirit. They sometimes receive criticism because of their large family size, but Jeni and Ray fully stand by their lifestyle. “It’s not for everyone,” Ray admits, “but for us, it’s perfect.”
Now grandparents, they continue to navigate the beautiful chaos of family life with smiles and lots of love. For the Bonells, the secret to a happy big family lies in love, laughter… and flawless organization.
