In December 2005, in Fargo, North Dakota (USA), Belle (Isabelle) and Abby Carlsen were born. Two adorable infants, but connected in a very rare way: their chests and abdomens were fused. This anomaly, called conjoined twinning, occurs only once in every 60,000 births. Their situation was even more complex because they shared some vital organs. Doctors quickly understood that surgical separation would be inevitable to give them a chance at independent survival. But the operation carried immense risks.
The Parents’ Decision
For their parents, Amy and Jesse, it was a painful dilemma: attempt an uncertain surgery or see their daughters remain joined for life. Supported by a highly skilled team from Minnesota, they chose to place their hope in the surgery. At just six months old, Belle and Abby were placed on the operating table.
