In the quiet countryside of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the year 1898 was marked by drought, hunger, and the silent suffering of all those whom life had cast aside. Among them was Maria das Dores Ferreira, a 63-year-old widow whose existence had gradually been worn down by misfortune. Two years earlier, she had buried her husband.
