Her baby wouldn’t stop crying. After having to stop to breastfeed her child, this mom received a €115 fine. She was shocked by the penalty, as she had no choice but to feed her little one.
This shocking testimony was reported by CBS News. While driving with her 3-week-old infant, the mother had to make an emergency stop because her baby was crying out of hunger. The woman quickly parked to nurse her child, but the police punished her with a significant fine. Sadly, this is not the first time a breastfeeding mother has faced such discriminatory treatment. In Mexico, a man once demanded a woman cover herself because she was breastfeeding her baby in a restaurant.
A mother is contesting a fine she received after stopping to breastfeed her baby in New York, CBS New York reported. Guillermina Rodriguez, a mother of four, was driving through midtown Manhattan on Thursday with her crying 3-week-old baby in the back seat.
“There was a lot of traffic. It took me about 45 minutes to an hour just to go from 42nd to 30th Street,” she explained.
She eventually found a place to stop. “Even though I saw it was a commercial zone, I thought, ‘I’m not blocking traffic… I’ll just stay here to breastfeed the baby,’” said the mother.
Rodriguez moved to the back of her car to nurse. A few minutes after she started, an NYPD tow truck arrived.
“The tow truck driver was reversing to tow my vehicle while I was breastfeeding. I jumped into the driver’s seat to honk and show him I was there,” she said.
The officer issuing the fine then approached her vehicle.
“I was breastfeeding on one side and pumping on the other, so both my breasts were exposed. I turned to him and said, ‘I’m breastfeeding my baby!’” Rodriguez humorously recounted. “He looked at me, said, ‘Oh, okay,’… stuck the ticket on the windshield and left.”
The mother was fined €115 for parking in a commercial zone.
The NYPD told CBS New York that the officer issued the ticket before realizing Rodriguez was breastfeeding and, lacking the authority to cancel the fine, could not take further action.
“I think they should have shown more sensitivity,” she said.
Rodriguez believes officers should consider breastfeeding an emergency sufficient to exempt mothers from fines. “I think greater awareness of such situations would be really helpful,” she added.
She plans to contest the fine and hopes the judge is a parent.
