Head-on collisions are the most dangerous road accidents. They often cause serious injuries and can even be fatal. These accidents usually happen when drivers try to overtake on the highway but misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming vehicles.
However, there are some simple tricks to help you spot the danger in time and avoid the accident.
- Do I have a clear view ahead? If the view is blocked by a curve, a hill, or bad weather, it’s best not to overtake.
- Can I complete the overtaking maneuver safely? If you’re not 100% sure, don’t risk it.
- What will the driver I’m overtaking do? Some drivers speed up when being overtaken, which can make the situation dangerous.
What if a car is coming straight at you?
If a car trying to overtake another vehicle ends up in your lane, you only have seconds to react.
1️⃣ Turn on your brake lights to indicate which way you’re moving. This prevents confusion.
2️⃣ Give a short honk. The other driver may not have noticed you.
3️⃣ Slow down, but don’t slam the brakes. Hard braking can lock the wheels and make steering difficult.
What if a crash is unavoidable?
Check the roadside in advance (curb or shoulder) so you know if you can safely swerve off the road if needed.
Also, be aware that some drivers get aggressive when being overtaken. Instead of slowing down, they accelerate and turn it into a race. This is extremely dangerous and can lead to an accident.
