Growing up in a family of eight children is a major challenge, especially when poverty is a daily guest. This young girl lived without electricity, often relying on social aid, and queued for free school meals.
Despite these hardships, she overcame her difficult past to become one of Hollywood’s most famous and influential figures today.
Born in the small mining town of Nelsonville, Ohio, she grew up in a modest household.
Her father, Stephen, an aspiring writer, and her mother, Barbara, a kindergarten teacher, divorced when she was a baby. Her mother remarried Paul, a truck driver, forming a blended family of eight children. In this context, saving money was essential to meet everyone’s needs.

Her mother, a real conductor of chaos, managed to care for eight children while working and keeping the house running. Clothing-wise, she bought her daughters two pairs of shoes a year and cheap dresses, often found at clearance sales.
Despite lacking all she could have wished for, she remembers having everything she needed. She recalls the lively atmosphere at home, where voices often had to be raised — just to be heard in such a big family.
She never imagined the life she has today. Since childhood, she simply dreamed of being an actress. The quiet determination of her parents in the face of hardship shaped her drive and ambition.
Family remains at the heart of her life. In September 2022, she faced a difficult moment with the loss of her stepfather Paul, who passed away at 76 after a sudden illness. His death came just one day after she missed an important gala for family reasons.
