Everyone should know what to do in case to encounter a mother bear with her cubs. Even if you are very curious or brave, you shouldn’t approach them. It could be very dangerous.
But police officer Thomas Owens tried to risk and rescue the little cub’s life.
Thomas Owens from Carroll Police Department was on a patrol, when he saw the bear family. This scene was very natural and common for him, as he has seen many bears during his life.
There are more than 5,000 bears living in New England. So, he knew very well how to behave yourself when see them. He was cautious.
Thomas stopped his car to wait until the mother bear and her cubs cross the road. But soon he noticed that something was wrong.
The mother bear and her three little babies were trying to cross the road. But there was something strange: they came back and crossed the road again. For some minutes, they kept going back and forth.
Soon, it turned out that one of the babies, the 4th cub, couldn’t keep up with his family.
The police officer realized that one of the babies was in trouble. But before acting, he noticed that momma bear and her family crossed the road and disappeared in the bushes, living the 4th baby behind.
Apparently it was a hard decision for the mother bear, but maybe she did it to save the lives of the other cubs.
The officer Owens decided to risk and approach to the 4th cub. He went out from his vehicle and come close to the poor cub, who looked frightened and somehow confused. He stayed by cub’s side and called the New Hampshire Wildlife and Fish asking for a help.
The brave officer knew that it was dangerous, because the mother bear could come back any time, and imagine what could happen when she see someone near her little baby.
Soon, the helping group arrived. During their way, they discovered the 5th baby bear, who was frightened and sick. Two brothers were taken to the local rehabilitation center. Owens followed them.
The cubs will spend some time at the center to become strong and healthy. Then they can go back and reunite their mother and other brothers.
