It happened in Spain, a 10-month-old dog was admitted to the animal rescue center in Granada.
She seemed to consist of a skeleton covered with skin.
Who brought her to this state is still unclear. It is only known that she was locked in a room for a long time without food and water.
The dog, which turned out to be a female, was named Barilla after a brand of Italian spaghetti pasta because she was so thin.
Her muscle mass almost atrophied. She could not walk on her own and even stood with difficulty.
The owner of the rescue center in Granada, Eduardo Rodriguez, gave the dog a chance, and they began to gradually take care of her.
At admission, she weighed only 7.2 kg, and now her weight is 21 kg.
But at first, few believed that she would recover. “When I saw her, all she could do was wag her tail and move her head a little, her muscle mass almost atrophied,” says Rodriguez.
“I have been rescuing dogs since childhood, and I’m used to seeing them in a tortured state. But this is probably the most terrible case of my work,” says Rodriguez, “If she spent at least another night without our help, she wouldn’t survive.”
When Barilla began to try to eat normal food, she did it lying down, barely able to raise her head.
Even a week later, she was still too weak to stand on her feet. But then she began to recover and everyone realized that the crisis was over.
Now Barilla lives in the house of Eduardo Rodriguez, along with his wife, daughter and five other dogs.
– I have five other dogs living at home. But Barilla is the first one who could become a companion dog for me. I felt this amazing desire to live in her, and it seemed to bind us together. Her recovery was amazing, from day 4-5 she put on weight almost a kilogram a day, eating 5-6 meals a day.
I look at her first photos and those in which she is now, and it seems to me that these are two different dogs. Now we are inseparable from each other. She is so smart and obedient. Back on that first day, I told my colleagues that I would probably take her home, and so it happened.
