Not only has Michaela overcome countless challenges, but she has also proven that determination and resilience can transform the greatest adversities into shining success.
Born in Sierra Leone in 1995 as Mabinty Bangura, Michaela lost her parents at an early age due to the civil war and was placed in an orphanage. Suffering from vitiligo, a condition that causes white patches on the skin, she was subjected to rejection and ridicule, even being labeled as the “devil’s child.” Considered the least desirable child, she endured hunger and neglect.
One day, a picture of a ballerina in a magazine changed her life. She dreamed of dancing to experience the joy she saw in that image.
At the age of three, after surviving violence, she was adopted by Elaine DePrince and her husband, who also chose to adopt her friend Mabinty to avoid confusion. Michaela, renamed by her adoptive parents, quickly expressed her dream of becoming a dancer.
Despite her traumatic past and the prejudice she faced in the United States, her parents supported her unconditionally. However, Michaela encountered obstacles related to her skin color in the dance industry. One teacher even told her that Black ballerinas had no future, but Michaela persevered with Elaine’s unwavering encouragement.
At 17, she joined the Dance Theatre of Harlem, marking the start of a brilliant career. Michaela stood out for her talent, tenacity, and ability to overcome challenges. In 2020, she lost her adoptive father, dedicating her performances to him.
Today, recognized globally, Michaela inspires others with her courage and determination.
