Jake and Erin Herrin gave birth to their twin daughters, Kendra and Malia, in February 2002. People who witnessed the birth of these conjoined twins reacted in various ways.
Even though the new parents were thrilled to welcome them into the family, they couldn’t help but worry about their health. Kendra and Malia lived together in the same house until Malia was 4 years old.
The twins were separated immediately and decisively by their parents so that each child could have the chance to develop their own sense of independence.
Malia and Kendra each had only two legs, so they could only control one leg of the other. The girls could move and play once they had learned to work together, which they had to do before they could do either of those things.
In 2006, a group of thirty-one doctors successfully separated the conjoined twins through surgery.
It took them more than a day to complete, and the media, including television, paid a lot of attention to the whole process. Because of this, Kendra and Malia became like little stars.
At the age of four, the girls were divided into two groups. This was the first time each of them could do things on their own.
Even though they didn’t want it, they had no choice but to change their lives quickly. After only three years, the girls began attending school part-time in addition to learning at home.
The girls’ artistic skills kept improving. They could spend hours drawing in their room while listening to their favorite song or playing their favorite video game.
Kendra and Malia showed their peers multiple times that there are always reasons to hope, even when things go wrong.
For this reason, they were held in high esteem by everyone at school, and their classmates did everything they could to help them.
