A 16-year-old female orangutan wowed tourists and Peyton Zoo staff by making a dress out of an old coffee bag.

It is noteworthy that none of her relatives thought of this.

According to the Mirror, a 16-year-old female orangutan named Gambira from the Peyton Zoo in Devon, UK, stunned tourists by appearing in front of them in a casual striped dress.

Zoo officials later explained to the tourists that they had decided to give the coffee bags donated by the Costa Rica Plantation to the orangutans and see how the monkeys would use them.

“We wanted to test how curious they are and how agile they are,” says mammal curator and author of the experiment, Neil Bemment.

At first, the actions taken by the orangutans did not impress the specialists too much: the animals acted like most people – they used the material they received to improve their living conditions.

“They needed whole bags that the monkeys used as a roof and curtains, replacing huge leaves growing in the wild. Thus, they protected themselves from heat, rain and prying eyes. They also liked pieces of tissue – they soaked them in liquid and sucked or chewed,” Bemment describes the behavior of primates.

Soon the attention of the monkey-watching staff was attracted by Gambira, who was working hard and concentrated on the bag: the monkey, who managed to push her paws into the holes cut out by the caretakers, widened another hole to stick her head into it.

When the efforts of the “modiste” were crowned with success, she went for a walk in a new dress, which caused big laughter of the visitors.

“We cut holes in the bags, but no one except Gambira used them. She surprised us all,” the curator of mammals admitted with a smile. “This behavior proves the intelligence and curious nature of monkeys. Such experiments have a great effect on orangutans, as they stimulate their mental and physical development.”

The zoo staff joked that they planned to give Gambira another bag so that the fashionista could complete the dress with a hat and a purse.
