David Bahnson, a retired surgeon, has always enjoyed traveling with his dogs and kayaking.

And one day he came up with the perfect way to combine these two things.

The man built a kayak designed specifically for dogs.

Now, any water trip is not complete without his four-legged friends.

“Our dogs have always loved to travel with us in cars, planes and boats. Giving them that opportunity wasn’t too difficult, and boats are fun to build anyway,” Bahnson says.

David first came up with the idea when he noticed that one of his dogs fit easily into the luggage compartment of a kayak he had built earlier.

David modified the luggage compartment into a “dog-shaped opening” that wouldn’t have enough legroom for a human, but which was great for his dog Susie.

He also added special fasteners to keep water out. Thus, his pet could move safely during exciting journeys.

When he got a second dog, a golden retriever named Ginger, he made another hole in the boat.

Thanks to his ingenious invention, which was perfect for dogs, David was able to do what he loves with his four-legged friends, and the happy dogs got the unique opportunity to ride in a kayak, which they really enjoyed.

“They seem to really enjoy it. They are very happy, even when we just pull out the boats. Dogs are trained to climb into the kayak on their own on command. They take their seats, and we are on our way,” Bahnson says.

Sadly, Susie and Ginger have already passed away, but apparently they have had time to enjoy unforgettable moments spent together with their loving owner.

Later, the dog kayak passed to a new generation. “Now my wife takes our new golden retriever Piper with her on boat trips,” Bahnson says.
